What is Networking ?

Networking is a process of connecting two or more computers for sharing data or information from one computer to another computer. Through the networking, computers share information such as email, file, documents and resources such as a printer, internet and disk storage. Computers on a network are called nodes. The connection between computers can be done via cabling, most commonly the Ethernet cable, or wirelessly through radio waves.

Characteristics of a Computer Network:

  • Share resources from one computer to another.
  • Create files and store them in one computer, access those files from the other computer(s) connected over the network.
  • Connect a printer, scanner, or a fax machine to one computer within the network and let other computers of the network use the machines available over the network.

Hardware’s required to set up a computer network:

Networking Cable

  • Network Cables
  • Distributors
  • Routers
  • Internal Network Cards
  • External Network Cards

It is a worldwide/global system of interconnected computer networks. It uses the standard Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Every computer in Internet is identified by a unique IP address. IP Address is a unique set of numbers (such as which identifies a computer’s location.

A special computer DNS (Domain Name Server) is used to provide a name to the IP Address so that the user can locate a computer by a name.

Intranet is the system in which multiple PCs are connected to each other. PCs in intranet are not available to the world outside the intranet. Usually each organization has its own Intranet network and members/employees of that organization can access the computers on their intranet.

Difference between Internet and Intranet:

1. Internet is wide network of computers and is open for all.
2. Internet itself contains a large number of intranets.
3. The number of users who use internet is Unlimited.
4. The Visitors traffic is unlimited.
5. Internet contains different source of information and is available for all.

1. Intranet is also a network of computers designed for a specific group of users.
2. Intranet can be accessed from Internet but with restrictions.
3. The number of users is limited.
4. The traffic allowed is also limited.
5. Intranet contains only specific group information.
